The Power of Collaboration
While earning my master's degree in "Inclusive Arts" (a University of Brighton-based program focused on bringing art to marginalized communities), my thesis explored how a collaborative art-making process could foster a sense of belonging. I found that by bringing diverse voices to a shared vision, trust and cooperation were naturally developed amongst participating artists. Social barriers and hierarchies melted away as shared memories were created and a sense of pride and place were established. Making artwork as a team (whether that be a quilt, a mandala, an installation, or a mural) has been especially impactful when working with international populations since a shared language is no longer the most important tool needed to connect. Collaborative art-making transforms individual experiences into collective ones, weaving people together in a way that deepens their connection to one another and nurtures a shared sense of community.

While working as a visiting artist, I am always happy to collaborate with the school's teachers and administrators to create a rich workshop experience that aligns with the curriculum and is mission-driven. I have worked with Math, History, and ELD teachers to create lessons that tie into what students are working on in other classes. I also believe in Art for Art's sake!
