Collaborative Neighborhood Map
This collaborative painted mural was made by my 6th grade Art students at the request of the school's admissions department as a way to highlight key buildings and landmarks in our neighborhood.
Community Paper Weaving
Using Zoom, I spent four weeks leading neighbors who were experiencing Covid lockdown in a collaborative art-making experience. We began with watercolor basics and eventually experimented with various weaving techniques. Participants then cut their paintings into strips, I collected them all, and then redistributed the pieces to participants so that they could create a weaving using their own and their neighbors' paintings.
All-School Collage
Following the model of "Reduce-Reuse-Recycle", this large collage contained contributions from the entire middle school student body, which each creating and attaching a feather, repurposing paper scraps.
All-School Environmentally-Themed Mural
425 elementary school students contributed to this large-scale environmentally-themed mural along the playground wall. It was approximately 60 feet long.
All School Ink Mural
This large-scale mural was created by Art students in grades 6-12 using sumi ink. This is the first all-school visual art collaboration at Northwest Academy.
Baby Blankets for Local Shelter
This quilt is part of a series of baby blankets designed by and hand stitched by elementary Art students, which were made to be donated to a local shelter.
Togo Village School Mural
This mural was collaboratively painted by a group of volunteer students from the International School of Brussels and students at a local village school in Togo on their school grounds. This was created during a three-week high school service trip I chaperoned.
Large-scale Mandala
This large student-designed mandala was created as part of a community day, where groups of students were put together to create one cohesive work of art to represent their "team".
Campus-wide Puppet Parade
In collaboration with fourth grade homeroom teachers, students worked in teams to choose a character from a book they were reading and create a large-scale puppet of that character. 100+ students marched proudly, parading their puppets through the campus.
Schoolyard Community Weaving
When safety issues called for the school to install a large fence around the playground, the once-open space felt dark and constricted. To combat this, I organized a community event where the entire school repurposed used fabrics and cut them into strips. Then students worked in teams to create woven designs to embellish the fence.
Environmental Sculpture
Students worked in groups of 2-3 to choose a location in the forest near the school and then create an environmental sculpture recognizing and working with their unique location.
Shadow Puppets
Students created storyboards and divided up tasks amongst themselves while creating shadow puppet stories using an overhead projector.
Book Illustration
Seeing a need for children in developing countries to have relatable texts with images they could identify with, my Art students worked together to write and illustrate five children's books, which were distributed through several African countries.
